Nextdoor

Mobile UX/UI Design:

Social neighborhood app

Nextdoor is a way for neighbors to connect, buy and sell, share and be an active part of their community.

As part of a group, we added a feature to Nextdoor that would help reduce the amount of conflict.

research

Nextdoor is known to have conflicts between members, and many users have taken to the reviews to express their frustrations. We decided to try and tackle this problem and create a mediation feature where users would have resources to work through conflict and try to prevent it.

Feature Analysis

Interviews

4 Interviews | 1 survey with 6 participants

Wireframes

Create a chatbot to help users by answering questions about resources.

Video, articles, and audio on conflict management, navigating difficult situations, and how to prevent conflicts.

Inclusive media options.

Meditation, stress relief, media, templates, and FAQ sections.

We decided to move forward without the chatbot and narrow our scope. There were too many good ideas, but not enough time to achieve everything we wanted. After creating our wireframes, we moved on to higher fidelity and focused on creating a resource section within the dashboard. All of our design decisions needed to fit within the current style of the app.

Usability Testing

Iterations

Adding “View” button

Placing Conflict Resources within the user’s dashboard

Takeaways

  • Decide on scope, and stick with it. Staying within the scope of the project ensures that we move efficiently and that we can focus on the user pain points.

  • Be flexible with changes. Design decisions, schedule, and individual tasks changed throughout the project.

  • Keep accessibility and inclusivity top of mind from the beginning. It is easier to make changes at the beginning rather than towards the end of the project.

  • Honor individual personalities and strengths. We had a talented illustrator in our group and she was able to take on the illustrations that we incorporated-and she nailed it. Each person was able to add their touch to different areas of the project.
